Key Stage 1

At Key Stage One (Years 1 and 2) we cover all the subjects of the National Curriculum. French is added to the curriculum in Year 2. Although we place a strong emphasis on English, Mathematics and Science we believe in providing our children with a broad and balanced curriculum, thus enabling them to achieve the best that they can. With great enjoyment and pleasure the children also study History, Geography, Art, Design Technology, Religious education, Personal social and health education, ICT, Music and PE. Subject specialists teach PE, Music and French; all other subjects are taught by our highly qualified and committed class teachers, supported by classroom assistants. We understand the importance of developing literacy and numeracy skills in order to help the children access all areas of the curriculum. Cursive handwriting is successfully taught from the Foundation Stage.

We aim for high academic standards, but understand that the children must be given time to develop at their own pace. Individual talents and abilities are encouraged as we aim to foster each child's particular strengths, thus building self-confidence and a love of learning. Our curriculum is carefully planned, always building on what has been taught the previous year. Our delightful, well resourced classrooms are brightened by stimulating displays of the children's work.

Access to the swimming pool at Mill Hill School greatly enhances the children's PE curriculum. Year 1 begin swimming in the summer term, with Year 2 swimming weekly all year round. We are also able to use the theatre at Mill Hill School for our concerts and highly praised musical performances. At Key Stage One the children have weekly keyboard lessons with our Music Specialist.
